BAVARIA 36. Built 2002 (to 2003 spec) and commissioned 2003. 3 owners, the last having bought the boat in 2005. “Valkyrie” has been very lightly used, mainly for cruising in Chichester Harbour and the Solent, and is consequently in very good condition compared to other Bavaria 36 of a similar age. Designed by J&J Design of Slovenia and built by Bavaria Boats in Germany, this popular masthead sloop has the appearance of a well-designed, unpretentious and modern cruising boat; being as pretty and seamanlike as many boats that cost twice as much.
Hull and Deck:
Built to Lloyds of London's specifications, all Bavaria's are constructed with hand laid fiberglass to the waterline and Divinycell (a semi-rigid PVC foam used as a sandwich core material when strength, stiffness and low weight is desired) from the waterline up. Having excellent insulating properties, and a closed-cell structure that makes it impervious to water, this insulates the hull and reduces the sweating and that clammy feeling that so often found in colder northern waters. One of the Lloyd's requirements is also for an overlap seam at the hull keel joint. Many boat builders simply have the glass meet, leaving a seam that is not as strong.
On the transom is a vinyl rub rail for friendlier docking. Other features include a rudder with Jefa needle roller bearing fitted in 2017 where the lower third is a shear off section. That means that if the rudder comes into contact with something hard, the lower portion will breakaway, leaving some portion of the blade to help get to safety.
In the cockpit, storage is plentiful and all winches, led blocks, and line locks are backed with an aluminium plate moulded into the deck.
The Bavaria has a Whitlock steering system - chain to cable - with a single lever engine control. The engine gauges are located on the aft side of the pedestal base, which is convenient for starting and stopping the engine. The covered wheel is standard, as are the Harken primary winches and electric anchor winch.
Like other Bavaria 36, “Valkyrie” comes with adjustable genoa cars, Seldon rigid boom vang and adjustable backstays. The traveller is mounted forward of the companion way with controls led to the coach top winches. Mainsail, sail cover, lazy jacks, sprayhood and cockpit cover newly laundered Feb 2020.
The headroom in a Bavaria 36 is an ample 6'2". The cabinetry is clean and functional and with the boat only being lightly used it still has an has an almost unused elegance to it. Locker fronts are curved mahogany, which adds to the openness below. The fore cabin has a large V-berth, with a two-piece foam mattress, giving good access to the storage below. There is also a good-sized double quarter berth and two singles in the saloon. Storage throughout the boat is plentiful.
The galley with a two-burner stove and oven, top loading fridge and sink is situated directly across from the forward-facing navigation station; behind which is the integrated shower and head. “Valkyrie” is also fitted with a 300L hot & cold pressurised water system and Eberspacher D4 Airtronic heating serviced in 2017.
Access to the engine compartment is good, aided by a hydraulic strut on the companionway stairs, making for easy checking of the oil and status of the seacocks.
The Bavaria 36 sails well both in light winds and heavy weather; being fully battened the mainsail keeps its shape and the roller furling genoa gives the boat good upwind performance. All the controls lead to the coach roof making boat handling from the cockpit relatively easy. The lazy jack system works well for catching the sail as it is lowered, again precluding the need to venture forward in rough seas or when short-handed.
The Bavaria’s 29 hp Volvo Penta Saildrive, with three-point attachment, has been proven to be smooth and reliable and the standard, two-bladed propeller stops the boat quickly upwind and downwind. The tight turning radius of the boat and single lever throttle and gear selector allows for excellent manoeuvrability and control in tight quarters.
With her comprehensive inventory, very little use, spacious accommodation and good sailing performance “Valkyrie” is a well-built sailing cruiser that is equally well suited to either a family or couple who require more space.
